The class — made up of new moms and the resistance offered by their babes and strollers — takes to the boardwalk for an hour.

While their moms work up a sweat, they take in the scenery, babble and drool, let out giggles and the occasional cry. Safely buckled in strollers, bundled up with their snacks, sippy cups and bottles, the youngsters look happy to be part of Mom’s weekly exercise routine. “She likes it because she’s nosey,” said Krista Peters of her 14-month-old daughter, Chloe. “She tends to watch everybody.” Between diaper changes, feedings, laundry and countless other tasks on a new mom’s to-do list, it’s not easy to find time to get active. But a new exercise program is helping change that.

Stroll ‘N Tone encourages moms to bring their babies with them. “I was going out, exercising on my own a lot. I wanted to spend time with her,” Karla Murphy said of her year-old daughter Gracie. “I know she’s young and it may sound silly, but to get her involved with being active, that’s something that is very important.”

At each session, mothers pushing babies in strollers walk and run along the Summerside boardwalk, working up a sweat, raising their heart rates. About 20 moms are in the class. They do lunges, squats, sit-ups and pushups with their little ones along for the ride. “It’s a little harder having to push the stroller,” said Peters with a laugh. “It gives you that extra upper body workout.”
